Spotted gum or Merbau: choosing a decking timber
Two of the most popular decking hardwoods in Queensland, and the honest trade-offs between them.
One of the hardest decisions when building a new timber deck is what material to use.
Two of the most popular timbers are spotted gum and Merbau, both for very good reason, and both with their downsides.
Spotted gum
- Resistant to lyctid borer and termites
- Less tannin leaching
- Fire resistant
- Sustainably sourced
- Australian timber
- Long-lasting durability
- Variation of colours and patterns
- Greys over time
- Widely available
Merbau
- One of the most affordable hardwood deckings
- Bleeds tannins more
- Sourced in South East Asia
- Not always sustainably sourced
- Durable
- Golden colours that age to a darker red-brown
- Termite resistant
- Not resistant to lyctid borer
- Widely available
So which one?
Both timbers carry a very high durability rating, with an expectancy of around 40 years of decay resistance when used above ground, such as decking or screening.
Above all it comes down to personal choice and budget. Both need to be maintained to keep their appearance fresh and to help resist harmful UV and extreme weather. Both come in a range of widths and suit most areas.
